The Golden Gate Open has Daedo electronic sparring gear available for black belt sparring competitors of all ages. That means that even the younger competitors (ie. elementary school students) will be able to compete using a less-biased electronic scoring system.
Because this event typically has a smaller turnout, there may be less wait time before you or your athlete competes. This is good for parents with young kids - who may not have the patience or energy for a longer day.
In the past, the Golden Gate Open has simply rolled out some thin, plastic tarp for its designated rings. Thin plastic on top of a wooden basketball court may be less comfortable than what your athlete is used to. For younger kids padded with sparring gear from head to toe, this may not be much of an issue. However, for athletes who are used to sparring on thick, rubber puzzle mats, this may be something to factor into your decision-making.
Because the Golden Gate Open is a small event hosted by Kim's Martial Arts Institute, it is most common to see nothing more than a handful of in-network schools participating at this event.
